Hemp Sustainability!

Hemp absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) as it grows, more effectively than trees, which makes it a carbon-negative raw material. Industrial hemp absorbs between 8 to 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare of cultivation. Its cultivation also requires fewer fertilizers and pesticides compared to traditional crops, and it can even improve the soil’s quality. The crops also produce more usable fibers per hectare than forestry.

History of hemp usage:

Hemp faced a decline in the U.S. due to the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act and its classification as an illegal Schedule I drug in 1970. The industry began to recover in the late 1990s with the import of food-grade hemp and the first hemp licenses granted in 2007. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act, revitalizing the U.S. hemp industry.

What is hempcrete?

Hempcrete is a bio-composite material, a mix of the woody inner fibers of the hemp plant, water, and lime, which acts as a binder. This sustainable building material is gaining recognition due to its excellent insulation properties and its carbon-negative profile. It is also fire-resistant, has sound-absorbing qualities, and better hygrothermal properties than conventional concrete.
